Have you ever heard of the ancient grain, spelt? It’s one of the oldest cultivated grains, dating back over 7,000 years. You might recognise it more on your plate than in your skincare, like in bread, pasta, or wholesome breakfast bowls. But did you know it’s also loved and highly effective in skincare too?
Now, before you picture rubbing a slice of sourdough across your face, let me explain. When carefully pressed into oil, spelt becomes one of the richest natural sources of vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants, all of which your skin absolutely loves. And this is where our lovely brand Aeos comes in.
Aeos isn’t your typical skincare brand. They don’t just pick ingredients from a selection of suppliers and combine them together to make their magic. They literally grow them (mostly) themselves.
Their whole philosophy is built on the belief that what nourishes the soil ultimately nourishes the skin, and even the soul. That means starting with their own biodynamic farm in Lincolnshire, where plants and grains like spelt are grown in harmony with nature, without man made chemicals or pesticides.
From there, they add layers of uniqueness that make Aeos truly stand out:
And when combined together, you have skincare that feels less like a routine and more like a ritual, and one that connects you to the earth, to your skin, and maybe even to something bigger than both.
So why spelt? Out of all the plants and botanicals Aeos could have chosen, why does this ancient grain take the main spot? The answer lies in its nutrient profile, and the way Aeos grows and extracts it.
First and foremost, Spelt oil is naturally rich in vitamin E, one of the skin’s favourite antioxidants. That means it helps protect against free radical damage (pollution, stress, UV exposure), while also softening fine lines and supporting skin elasticity. It also strengthens the skin barrier, locking in moisture so your complexion stays calm, supple, and resilient.
But vitamin E isn’t the only benefit spelt brings to the table:
Now, plenty of grains contain some of these nutrients, but what makes Aeos’s spelt so special is how it’s grown and harvested. Their biodynamic farm in Lincolnshire follows rhythms of nature to maximise vitality in the soil and, in turn, in the plants themselves. The spelt is then extracted using supercritical CO₂, a clean and gentle method that preserves its full potency.
The end product is an ingredient that doesn’t just moisturise, but genuinely helps your skin repair, protect, and thrive in a way that feels alive and deeply connected to the earth it came from. And we really love that.
Of course, spelt isn’t only for your skincare, it’s also a nourishing addition to your plate. As an ancient grain, it’s naturally higher in protein and fibre than modern wheat, and many people find it a little easier to digest. It’s also a source of key nutrients like manganese, phosphorus, and B vitamins, which support energy and overall health.
And here’s the best bit, spelt is just as rich in antioxidants like vitamin E, polyphenols, and carotenoids when eaten as it is when applied to your skin. In other words, it nourishes you from the inside out. That’s what makes Aeos’s choice of spelt even more meaningful, as it’s an ingredient we can relate to and benefit from both inside and out.
💡 If you’re curious to try spelt in your diet, we recommend swapping ordinary pasta for Northern Pasta Co — oh my gosh, it’s so good! Still contains gluten, of course, but it’s higher protein and more nutrient dense, so if you can tolerate gluten it’s definitely worth a try. If you’re local to Wilmslow, you can buy it at Rootstock, or order online if not.
So, back to Aeos (we couldn’t help but recommend the pasta, it’s that good!). One of the things we love about Aeos is how simple and intentional their range is. Rather than overwhelming you with dozens of different cleansers, serums, and creams, they’ve created two core colour collections which are Blue and Pink, plus a smaller body care offering in Yellow.
Now, here’s the interesting part, Aeos don’t ask you to choose based on your skin type. Instead, they ask you to pick the colour you feel most drawn to. Why? Because our emotions can affect our physical body, and our skin can reflect long standing emotional states. Colour, they believe, has the power to support emotional wellbeing, which in turn can create a positive shift in the skin.
And even if that philosophy doesn’t fully resonate, isn’t it quite empowering? The idea that your body instinctively knows what it needs, just by what you’re drawn to. We love it.
So, here are the reasons you may opt for one or the other:
And, if you’re not sure where to start, Aeos make it easy with starter kits. These little sets let you try the full range for a week (or sometimes longer) so you can see what works most with you. From there, you might settle on a few favourites like a cleanser, moisturiser, and hydrating mist, or maybe want to build yourself a full ritual. Either way, it’s about choosing what feels right for you.
When we first stocked Aeos years ago, we all jumped straight onto the starter kit and then picked our favourites. Honestly, if we asked everyone in the shop for their top three, the entire range would be listed here. So instead, we’ve narrowed it down to the four most common favourites.
Here’s why we love them:
If this has made you eager to try the products but you’re not sure what to go for, we have another option — Aeos facials! Yes, Aeos have created their very own crystal enhancing, spelt infused facials, and they are just as energetically magical as you’d imagine.
If you haven’t joined us for a treatment yet, we have a hidden little gem upstairs, a serene space of pure calm and relaxation. Think soft lights, soothing sounds, and our fabulous therapist guiding you through a ritual of Aeos’s biodynamic products, crystal essences, and their energised waters.
The facials are designed to transport you to what feels like heaven itself, giving your skin a glow and your mind a complete reset. They’re 90 minutes long, and you’ll be floating out the door. When our therapist first trained in Aeos facials, we were “forced” to spend 90 minutes trialling them in the clinic during our working day… tough job, isn’t it? 🤭 So, we can tell you first hand, they’re heavenly.
Who else is thinking about spelt in a whole new light? I know I am after writing this. Who knew it was such a superfood for both the skin and the body?
We say bravo to Aeos for making the most of this ancient grain, and for combining it with some of the most unique ingredients out there. From growing on their own biodynamic farm, to incorporating crystal essences, to energetically purifying their water, every single detail has been thought of to nurture the soil and the skin.
So whether you’re drawn to calming blue, nurturing pink, uplifting yellow, or even just fancy trying some healthy spelt pasta, we hope you’ve enjoyed learning the many joys of this ancient grain. And honestly? Give AEOS starter packs a try. They’re a bargain and one of our most popular Christmas stocking fillers every year (sorry for the C-word, but it had to be said!).
