Bentonite clay, also known as Montmorillonite or “healing clay”, is a natural clay formed from volcanic ash.
It is valued particularly in skincare for its unique properties such as having a negative electrical charge, which allows it to attract and bind to positively charged impurities (1).
When used topically, bentonite clay acts like a magnet or ‘sponge’ on the skin, drawing out dirt, toxins and excess oil.
As it dries and is washed away, these impurities are thought to be effectively lifted from the skin’s surface, leaving it refreshed and balanced (2).
Used externally on the skin, bentonite clay may help to:
Deeply cleanse pores and absorb excess oil
Draw out impurities and environmental build-up
Calm irritated, inflamed or sebum-congested skin
Support clearer-looking skin and fewer blemishes
Soothe the irritation from rashes, bites and other minor skin issues
Its mineral content and natural antibacterial properties also make it a popular choice for skin that feels stressed or out of balance.
Bentonite clay is most often used as a skincare treatment, such as:
Face masks: Mixed with water (and a splash of aloe vera gel, rose water or apple cider vinegar) into a smooth paste and applied for 10–20 minutes
Spot treatments: Dabbed onto blemishes or insect bites to help calm and dry the area
Gentle exfoliation: Added in small amounts to a cleanser to help smooth skin texture
Detox baths: Stirred into warm bath water or added into an Epsom salt soak to support a refreshing whole-body skin cleansing experience
Skincare formulations: Used in creams, sunscreens and barrier products to improve performance and adherence
Non-metal bowls and utensils are traditionally recommended, as metal may reduce the clay’s effectiveness.
Bentonite clay is primarily composed of the mineral montmorillonite, a type of smectite clay, but it also contains other minerals like silica, aluminium, iron, calcium, magnesium, feldspar, calcite, quartz, and sometimes zeolites, depending on its origin from weathered volcanic ash (3).
These varying mineral contents give it unique properties for skincare.
Bentonite clay is generally well tolerated when used on the skin. A feeling of tightness as the mask dries is normal.
People who struggle with sensitive skin may prefer shorter application times or a more diluted mixture to avoid any unwanted drying effects.
Bentonite clay is a traditional, mineral-rich skincare ingredient best known for its ability to draw out impurities. Used mainly in masks and treatments, it supports clearer, calmer-looking and glowing skin, naturally.
