Coenzymes assist enzymes to facilitate reactions, for example B vitamins and Coenzyme Q10 are needed for the reactions which produce energy in the body.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is present in the mitochondria of all cells in the body. It is vital to carry energy loaded particles needed to produce the energy currency in our bodies. This constant, continual process is what gives us life and vitality. However, it is believed 75% of people are deficient over the age of 50. Levels begin to decline in the mid to late 20s. A lack of sufficient CoQ0 can lead to cardiovascular disease such as heart disease, because the heart muscle is heavily reliant on CoQ10 to produce energy. There are a huge proportion of mitochondria energy factories within a heart muscle cell compared to any other cells in the body. Without enough CoQ10 the heart will not be able to circulate blood around the body effectively.
CoQ10 is also an antioxidant to stabilise free radical production, occurring daily in the body from exposure to pollution and chemicals from modern life. Energy production itself produces free radicals, which can be damaging to the cells in the body if their action is not blocked by antioxidants. This way, CoQ10 deficiency may cause premature ageing.
Coenzyme A
Coenzyme A is a substance made from vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). As mentioned, B vitamins are needed to produce energy in the body. This is a vital role for cells to generate energy from glucose from food. Coenzyme A helps to produce over 90 percent of the energy the body needs to function every day.
Foods High In Co-Enzyme Q10: organ meats, fatty fish, meat, broccoli, nuts & seeds
Deficiency or insufficiency stats can cause stiff, sore muscles and a decrease in energy.
Taken as a supplement coenzyme A increases energy, supports the adrenal glands and supports the immune system.
