Fruit enzymes are gentle exfoliators from papaya, pineapple and similar fruits.
They are often included in skincare products because they help loosen dead skin cells and create a smooth texture without disturbing the skin barrier. They do so via dissolving proteins that bind dead skin cells to the surface (1).
For this reason, they’re a good option for sensitive, acne-prone skin or skin that appears dull, as they are unlikely to disrupt the skin’s barrier.
Fruit enzyme extracts are also considered effective and gentle for treating itchy skin and dandruff due to their natural exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties (2).
Surface exfoliation for smoother texture without scrubbing or friction
Well tolerated by sensitive and breakout-prone skin
Helps ease congestion and dullness
Improves absorption of skincare products applied afterwards
Papaya (known as papain): Papain is a proteolytic enzyme, meaning it breaks down proteins. In skincare, it specifically targets and digests keratin proteins in the top layer of dead skin cells. Papain is recognised for its natural anti-inflammatory properties (4).
Pineapple (known as bromelain): A gentle yet effective proteolytic enzyme that breaks down keratin proteins to exfoliate dead skin cells, helping unclog pores, brighten uneven tone, calm inflammation, and support collagen activity.
Pumpkin: Enzyme-rich, naturally contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), and is often paired with lab produced gentle acids.
Kiwi: Exceptionally high vitamin C content, antioxidant-rich vitamins and polyphenols, and natural fruit enzymes such as actinidin that gently exfoliate while supporting a healthy, balanced pH.
You’ll find them in everything from cleansers to masks and serums. Some are designed to rinse-off, others as a leave-on treatment. In both cases, they tend to work best on freshly washed and dried skin (5).
Some products combine enzymes with acids, which can be effective but occasionally feel a bit too strong for certain skin types, like those with extremely sensitive skin.

Because they work mainly on the surface of the skin, fruit-derived enzyme products are usually well tolerated.
That said, if your skin’s new to exfoliation, starting slowly is advisable. Plus, people with allergies to latex, kiwi, or figs may experience allergic reactions to some of these ingredients. There’s also a danger of over-exfoliation, as, if used in too high a concentration or too frequently it may lead to increased sensitivity.
Fruit enzymes offer a gentle way to refresh the skin, helping it look clearer and more even without disrupting its delicate natural balance.
