Iodine

What is iodine?

Iodine is a trace element with a key role in thyroid health. It is involved in the production and balance of thyroid hormones and the prevention of goiters.

It also plays a role in energy and metabolism, specifically the metabolism of excess fats.

Food sources

Diary, seafood, sea vegetables eg. kelp, sea salt, asparagus, garlic. Note* foods in the brassica family when eaten raw, and in large amounts can block the uptake of iodine. Examples include cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale.

Signs and symptoms of deficiency / low iodine

Low energy, poor circulation (cold hands and feet).

Severe iodine deficiency can result in a goitre, an enlargement of the thyroid gland and swelling of the neck.

What are the benefits of iodine?

Thyroid function

Iodine is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in maintaining thyroid health. The thyroid gland uses iodine to produce thyroid hormones, which are responsible for regulating metabolism and controlling various bodily functions. Without sufficient iodine, the thyroid gland may not be able to produce enough hormones, leading to conditions like hypothyroidism.

One of the important functions of iodine is to prevent the development of goiters. A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland that occurs when it is unable to produce enough thyroid hormones. By ensuring an adequate intake of iodine, the risk of goitre formation can be reduced.

Metabolism

In addition to its role in thyroid health, iodine also contributes to energy and metabolism. It facilitates the breakdown and use of excess fats in the body, which is important for maintaining a healthy weight. Adequate iodine levels can support proper metabolic function and help prevent metabolic disorders.

Considerations

It's worth noting that while iodine is necessary for overall health, excessive intake can have undesirable effects. Therefore, it's important to maintain a balanced iodine intake within recommended guidelines. If you have specific concerns about iodine or your thyroid health, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance.
