Lutein

Lutein for eye, heart and skin health

Lutein is a natural carotenoid pigment that gives many fruits and vegetables their yellow or reddish colour.

Often named the “eye vitamin”, it is found in high concentrations in the macula of the eye.

What is lutein?

In the macula of the eye, it helps protect delicate tissues from light-induced damage (1).

But, because the body cannot make lutein on its own, it must be obtained through food or supplemental intake.

Lutein with zeaxanthin

Alongside zeaxanthin, lutein works as a natural partner in protecting the eyes and keeping them healthy. Both are carotenoids called xanthophylls, the pigments that give plants their yellow and orange tones (2).

Inside the eye, lutein and zeaxanthin sit together in the macula and retina, forming a layer that helps filter out blue light. This gentle filtering helps shield the eyes from light damage and supports clear, comfortable vision (3).

They also do more than just look after your eyes. Together, lutein and zeaxanthin act as antioxidants throughout the body.

Health benefits of lutein

Lutein is best known for its role in maintaining healthy vision. It may help slow or prevent age-related macular degeneration and is linked to a lower risk of cataracts.

Plus, by filtering blue light and reducing oxidative damage, it supports long-term eye comfort and clarity.

Some evidence suggests lutein may support cardiovascular health by helping to prevent the oxidation of fats in the blood, a process that can contribute to atherosclerosis.

Emerging research indicates lutein may help maintain brain health and cognitive performance as people age, possibly supporting memory and focus.

Lutein’s antioxidant activity may also extend to the skin, where it helps protect against the effects of ultraviolet light and supports a healthy, radiant appearance (4).

Dietary sources of lutein

Lutein is fat-soluble, meaning it is best absorbed when eaten with healthy fats such as olive oil, avocado, or eggs.

Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and collard greens are among the richest sources, and cooking them can sometimes boost lutein content.

Yellow and orange vegetables like corn, sweet peppers, peas, and squash also provide valuable amounts. Egg yolks are another excellent source, and their natural fat content helps the body absorb lutein more effectively (5).

Do vegans need to supplement lutein?

Vegans typically can get plenty of lutein and zeaxanthin if they have a diet high in leafy greens such as kale and spinach, along with avocados and other fruits and vegetables containing the nutrient.

However, a supplement should be considered if dietary intake tends to fall short.

Safety

Lutein is generally recognised as safe when consumed through food or supplements within normal amounts. It is well-tolerated by most people and has not been linked to any serious adverse effects.

Precautions

Very high intakes of lutein from supplements may occasionally cause a harmless yellowing of the skin, known as carotenodermia. In rare cases, large doses might lead to mild digestive discomfort or visual disturbances.

It is best to consult a healthcare professional before use, especially if taking medication or managing a health condition.

Takeaways

Lutein is a naturally occurring carotenoid with antioxidant qualities that help protect the eyes, heart, brain, and skin. Including plenty of colourful vegetables and eggs in your diet is an easy way to ensure a healthy intake.
