Have you heard about Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
We’re writing this blog to share more about this fascinating, science backed approach to health and wellbeing, and to talk about how it can support areas such as weight balance, habit change and mindset.
At Therapy, we’re always interested in approaches that look beyond symptoms and consider the wider picture of how the mind, nervous system and body interact, and why understanding this connection can make change feel more achievable.
Often, when we think about change, particularly around weight or habits, the focus tends to fall on what we should be doing. What to eat, how to move, which routine to follow. While these things matter of course, they don’t always explain why change can feel so hard to maintain, even when the information is there.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy looks at this from a slightly different angle. Rather than starting with behaviour alone, it considers the internal state that influences it. When the mind is under constant pressure, or the nervous system remains in a heightened state of alert, the body naturally prioritises safety over long term change.
By supporting nervous system regulation and helping shift attention away from threat and self criticism, this approach can help change feel more possible. From there, habits around food, movement and self care often begin to evolve more naturally, without force or pressure.
From this foundation, weight balance becomes less about control and more about creating the right conditions for the body to respond.
From a nutritional and physiological perspective, prolonged stress can have a significant impact on the body. Stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are closely linked to hunger, fat storage and food preferences. When these hormones remain elevated, cravings (particularly for sugary or high fat foods) often increase, and maintaining balance can feel far harder than normal.
In this state, the body tends to prioritise short term survival over long term change, even when intentions and knowledge are there. This helps explain why approaches based solely on calories, intense plans or willpower don’t always lead to lasting results. Often, the body isn’t resisting change, it’s just responding to overload and an overstimulated nervous system.
Approaches that support nervous system regulation, such as Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, may help create a steadier internal environment. From here, it can become easier to recognise patterns around emotional eating, understand why certain habits show up during stress, and respond more consciously rather than react automatically.
When the system feels calmer and more supported, weight balance often becomes less of a battle and more of a natural outcome. For many, motivation shifts away from discipline and towards understanding the body’s signals, supporting habit change that feels gentler, more sustainable and easier to maintain over time.
While food and movement often take the spotlight, sleep plays just as important a role when it comes to weight balance and overall wellbeing.
From a hormonal perspective, sleep is deeply regulatory. When we consistently undersleep, levels of leptin (the hormone that signals fullness) tend to fall, while ghrelin (the hormone that stimulates hunger) rises. At the same time, reduced sleep impairs impulse control, making cravings stronger and decision making harder.
Poor sleep can quickly create a loop where stress fuels eating, eating disrupts sleep, and the cycle continues. By supporting nervous system regulation and helping the mind move out of stress mode, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may also support better sleep. Many people find it easier to fall asleep, stay asleep, and feel more rested, which then supports appetite regulation, energy levels and mood.
Our relationship with food is complex and very personal, shaped by a blend of biological, psychological and social factors.
For those living with restrictive, compulsive or avoidant eating patterns, the nervous system is often under sustained pressure. While Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not replace medical or psychiatric care, it may offer supportive input alongside it.
By calming the stress response and strengthening self regulation, some people find it easier to soften harsh internal dialogue around food and approach eating with more compassion and awareness.
Progress within this kind of work is typically framed in small, achievable steps, helping change feel manageable, realistic and supportive rather than overwhelming.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a science informed approach that combines focused conversation with relaxed, receptive mental states. Hypnosis, in its truest form, is simply a state of focused attention, similar to daydreaming or becoming absorbed in a book.
Psychotherapy supports conscious understanding around patterns, beliefs and behaviours, while hypnotherapy works at a deeper level, where many habits and emotional responses are formed. Used together, the two approaches aim to support change both consciously and subconsciously.
At its core, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is exactly what it sounds like, a positive, future focused approach, rooted in neuroscience and research into how the brain forms habits and responds to suggestion.
This brings us to our incredible therapist Claire, who many of you will already know if you’re a regular customer to the shop.
Claire has been part of Therapy Organics for almost ten years, and during that time she has spoiled many clients with the most gorgeous treatments. When Claire began her training in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we knew she would bring something very special to this work.
What really stands out about Claire isn’t just her training (although there’s plenty of that), but her empathy and kindness. She’s warm, thoughtful and genuinely interested in everyone’s story, knowing that wellbeing is never ‘one size fits all'. Her work is always grounded in evidence, but delivered with the kindest heart, warmth, and care.
Sessions are collaborative rather than prescriptive, so clients can move at their own pace while feeling supported and understood. And most importantly, there’s no pressure to rush or ‘fix’ everything at once. You move at your own pace, in a space that feels supportive and safe, with someone who really listens.
So, If any part of this blog has resonated, even just a little bit, it may be worth looking at whether Solution Focused Hypnotherapy could support you.
The first step is a simple conversation, and a chance to reflect on what support might feel right. If you’re curious, get in touch with us to talk things through. And if you think of someone you care for that could benefit, then please share this with them too.
