Bruising has another name ‘contusion’, and is a common condition usually appearing as discolouration and a feeling of tenderness of the skin due to the rupture of blood vessels beneath the surface[i][ii].
Bruising is incredibly common after physical impact, there are several conditions which can also cause bruising to occur and should be checked out by a medical professional if believed to be an indication of something more serious than an accidental fall.
Certain natural naturopathic approaches can help speed up the healing process and alleviate discomfort. This article explores the causes of bruising, naturopathic remedies, and when to seek medical assistance for severe bruising[iii].
1. Arnica Montana: This homoeopathic remedy is widely used to reduce swelling, inflammation, and discolouration associated with bruising. Arnica gel or cream can be gently applied to the affected area[ix][x]. Arnica Montana
2. Bromelain: Derived from pineapples, bromelain is an enzyme with anti-inflammatory properties. It may help speed up the healing process by reducing inflammation and improving blood circulation. Bromelain supplements can be taken orally[xi][xii]. Bromelain
3. Vitamin C: Known for its role in collagen synthesis, vitamin C supports the integrity of blood vessels and can help prevent excessive bruising. Consuming vitamin C-rich foods or taking supplements may be beneficial[xiii]. Vitamin C
While most bruises heal on their own, severe bruising may need medical evaluation.
Seek medical assistance if:
- Bruises occur frequently or without apparent cause.
- Bruising occurs after a very bad traumatic event or injury: Bruises are accompanied by severe pain, swelling, or difficulty moving the affected area.
- Bruises don't improve within the expected timeframe or appear to be getting worse.
In cases of severe bruising, the following measures can help:
Naturopathic medicine can play a supportive role in managing bruises. Remedies such as arnica, bromelain, and vitamin C may help reduce inflammation, improve blood circulation, and support tissue healing. However, it's crucial to seek medical attention for severe bruising, particularly if accompanied by intense pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms.
