Barley Grass is sourced from the young plant and is often included as an ingredient in super greens powders or available as powder form on its own. It is an extremely nutrient dense green that has powerful nutritional properties. It is rich in a myriad of functional ingredients including gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), flavonoids, superoxide dismutase (SOD), potassium, calcium and vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin C and vitamin E.
It has been studied for its beneficial effect to balance blood sugar, promote sleep, regulate blood pressure, balance blood sugars, support healthy liver function, support bone health, alleviate eczema, have anti-inflammatory effects and have a protective role against chronic disease[i]. Due to its role to support the health of the liver and also manage a healthy lipid profile, it has also been shown to have anti-obesity effects[ii] but this is only in animal model studies so far. However, in a review of human studies, again relating to its ability to manage a healthy lipid profile, consumption of barley grass powder has been shown to significantly reduce LDL cholesterol so may be useful for the treatment of hypercholesteremia[iii].
We also recommend Barley Grass as a useful adjunct as a rich source of calcium in cases of Osteopenia and Osteoporosis in conjunction with prescribed medication and general bone health supportive dietary recommendations and supplements.
